The Documaster chronicle

Documaster is a tech startup established in 2014 in Oslo after a pilot project for Norway's third largest municipality. In the last four years, our team grew from three to more than thirty people, we got solid investors on board, and have been enjoying significant attention in our circles and by media lately. We have more than eighty customers and aim to double that number by the end of next year.

Our software helps private companies and public sector organizations comply with regulations and easily access their most valuable documents from a single place. From day one we are determined to transform the area of information governance by introducing new thinking and technologies, and improving the way in which people work.

After an incredible start in Norway, we established a dedicated product development team in Bulgaria two years ago and have started expanding the teams in both locations. We are also building an R&D team in Sofia now to tackle challenges in the information governance area using NLP and AI techniques.

Decommissioning engineer

Location: Sofia, Bulgaria

There are hundreds of legacy business systems out there that are no longer actively used but cannot be shut down because they contain important data. Such systems are incredibly costly for their owners and the seemingly obvious solution of migrating the data to an active business system is expensive and only reiterates the problem. Our solution is to move the data from those legacy systems into the standards-compliant structures supported by our product, make the data searchable and easily accessible, and allow the data to be exported via open APIs if necessary.

As a decommissioning engineer you will be breathing new life into long-forgotten or inaccessible but extremely valuable data stored in legacy business systems. You will be researching the data models of such systems, describing and mapping them to the Documaster data model, converting source documents to an archive format, and importing them along with the corresponding metadata into Documaster.

We have built a pipeline with several tools to support the work described above and automate it as much as possible. Among the tools we have developed is one that allows us to fingerprint databases to check whether a particular database has been encountered in the past, a tool for converting documents, and a tool for importing legacy system databases and documents into Documaster. As a decommissioning engineer you will be responsible for suggesting and implementing improvements to these tools based on your experience with the various legacy systems you come across.

We are looking for a person who has the natural curiosity required to research legacy business systems, who will take decisions daily on what the best approach is to retire a particular system, who has strong Java background and experience with relational databases, and excellent English writing skills.

UI designer

Location: Sofia, Bulgaria

We have always aimed to create software that is both visually pleasing and intuitive to use. With many new customers on board we want to add even more firepower to our design team in Sofia and have started looking for a talented UI designer with some experience in the area who wants to move to the next step in their professional career while working for one of the hottest companies in Scandinavia.

As a Documaster UI designer you will participate in the creation of almost every visual feature in our products under the guidance of our senior designers. You will have to go through software requirements, come up with original ideas for visualization, user experience, and interaction with the software, and create wireframes and storyboards to showcase your ideas to the product manager and engineers. Eventually, you will turn every great concept into an interactive pixel-perfect prototype and feed that to the developers who will work on the particular feature. You will also support their work by providing all required assets (HTML, CSS, icons, etc.) and offering guidance when necessary.

Your design decisions should always be based on the best practices in UI/UX design and on the fundamental principles of color theory, composition, and typography. You must be able to defend your ideas when communicating with our product managers and engineers, and make sure that the above principles are never sacrificed, while taking into account the needs of the end users too.

We are looking for a candidate with a relevant degree (arts, design, architecture, etc.), excellent English, at least two years of experience in the area, and strong graphic design and free-hand drawing skills. Experience with HTML/CSS, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator is a must, while knowledge of JavaScript is nice to have but can also be acquired once you join us.

Infrastructure engineer

Location: Sofia, Bulgaria

As an automation and infrastructure engineer in our company, you will be responsible for automating and documenting the processes of installing our product, upgrading it with little or no downtime, backing up all mission critical data, and monitoring the servers. An essential part of your job will be working with our developers. This will help you gain insight into the requirements, installation steps, and runtime specifics of our software.

You will be responsible for the smooth operation as well as the security and integrity of all Linux servers that run our products. You will work closely with our hosting partners in Norway to understand the physical infrastructure that powers our cloud, and suggest improvements. In addition, you will get into the specifics of our on-premise installations, some of which are in secure zones that are heavily firewalled.

Your main challenge will be to help us scale up and support the rising number of Documaster installations with the clear vision of being able to support a hundred and fifty installations by the end of 2017.

Senior QA engineer

Location: Sofia, Bulgaria

As a Documaster QA engineer, you will be responsible for making sure that the software we craft is always above and beyond the expectations of our customers and end users in terms of quality. You will learn a lot about the intricacies of electronic records management in Scandinavia from our specialist in the area and see how challenging it is to ensure the robustness of software products that must comply with both national and international standards. As a start, you will be performing functional and non-functional tests manually, which will help you get a grip on all aspects of our software. Your most important long-term goal will be to develop a tests automation framework that will allow us to produce more and better products.

You will work closely with our product owner and together define the requirements for all new functionality we develop. You will also ensure that every product increment meets the expectations of the business. To achieve this, you will constantly interact with our developers, suggest improvements in the software development process, and help us build a company atmosphere with an ever-increasing awareness of the importance of software quality.

Writing unit and integration tests is one of the key responsibilities of every developer in the company and, by saying “no” when necessary, you will be encouraging the developers to write better tests all the time. You will also be the person to say “no” to a release if the product needs more polishing. To get this process to work well, you will develop a clear definition of done that is known to everybody in the company, keeping in mind that developers also have a similar concept when it comes to code quality.

You will be testing Windows and Apple applications, and web interfaces, making sure that they look, feel, and work great on each browser in our supported browsers list. You will also be verifying that documents are converted correctly to one of several archive formats and that exported data complies with the standards our software supports. From time to time, you will be looking directly into a PostgreSQL or MongoDB database to validate the correctness of the data created by the system. You will face other similar situations and challenges that will help you develop your technical skills further and grow professionally.

Senior Java developer

Location: Sofia, Bulgaria

As a Documaster developer, you will learn the intricacies of electronic records management in Scandinavia and see how challenging it is to create great software that is also standards-compliant. Your key goal will be to make it easy for private and public sector organizations to archive their most valuable documents and to allow employees or the general public to easily find and retrieve these documents today as well as thirty years from today. You will be constantly looking for ways to breathe new life into old data.

As a Java developer, you will be developing new functionality in our records management system and document processing server both of which run on Linux and are based on open-source technology.

You will do data modeling while working with PostgreSQL and MongoDB, and will learn to overcome the limitations of object-relational mapping frameworks when using Hibernate. Having to think about multiple threads executing the same code at the same time will become a part of your daily routine. This will be extremely valuable when you start improving the code that indexes documents and metadata in Solr, the code that OCRs documents with Tesseract and converts them to PDF/A, or the code that exports terabytes of data from the system and needs to do it efficiently.

As a part of our team, you will also be designing and documenting web services, always considering their future use and backwards compatibility when a change is required. You will be writing unit and integration tests and configuring Bamboo build jobs to create Maven artifacts and push them to an artifact repository when a build runs successfully.

You will be using Git to squash and reword commits, merge and rebase branches, and handle releases, bugfixes and hotfixes. You will do code reviews and have your code reviewed.

Once you feel comfortable with the above, you will have the opportunity to occasionally tear off pieces of the system to refactor them. The goal will be to make the system better and keep the codebase small and easy to maintain.

Senior PHP/JavaScript developer

Location: Sofia, Bulgaria

As a Documaster developer, you will learn the intricacies of electronic records management in Scandinavia and see how challenging it is to create sexy software that also complies with standards. Together with our designer, you will always be looking for ways to make the process of archiving and retrieving valuable documents as effortless and intuitive as possible.

As a PHP/JavaScript developer, you will be working on our Symfony-based web interface which is the main point of entry to our records management system and document processing server, and what most end users see. You will be using web services to communicate with the backend components, but will nevertheless have to delve deeply into many of the underlying specifics including the data model, access control model, and development cycle.

You will be using a variation of MVC when writing PHP code for the user interface. To make the interface more appealing, you will be writing quite a lot of JavaScript while making sure that a minimum set of functionality is supported when JavaScript is disabled. You will have many close encounters with the Bootstrap framework and write Twig templates to allow our designer to help you with the HTML and CSS.

Your job will require a good understanding of the complete system, so you will be working with Linux quite extensively: writing Bash scripts, configuring Cron jobs, meddling with init scripts, and configuring Apache, among other Linux-related tasks. You will be using Git to squash and reword commits, merge and rebase branches, and handle releases, bugfixes, and hotfixes. You will also do code reviews and have your code reviewed.

When the time allows it, you will be refactoring code to try to keep the codebase small and easy to maintain. Occasionally you will also be talking to customers to understand their needs better. This will make it easier for you to create proof-of-concept prototypes, which is also an essential part of the job.
